The guide

What to know about Chestermere.

01
Where it is and getting around

Chestermere shares its western boundary with the City of Calgary. The Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) runs along the north side of the city, and Chestermere Boulevard continues west as 17 Avenue SE into Calgary, so commuters have two routes in. Downtown Calgary is commonly 20 to 30 minutes by car, and Stoney Trail (the Calgary ring road) is a few minutes west for reaching other parts of the city. Chestermere became a city in 2015 and is surrounded by Rocky View County.

02
The lake

Chestermere Lake runs north, south through the middle of the city. It is a reservoir on the Western Irrigation District's canal system, which means water levels are managed for irrigation and the lake is drawn down in winter. In summer it is used for boating, paddling, water-skiing and swimming; Anniversary Park and John Peake Park on the lakeshore have beaches, docks and picnic areas, and the Chestermere Water Festival is held each August. Some homes back directly onto the lake with private docks; most of the city's housing is set back from the water.

03
Communities

Lakeside Greens wraps around a golf course on the west side of the lake. Westmere, The Cove, Lakepointe and Waterford sit west and south of the water. On the east side: Rainbow Falls, Kinniburgh, Chelsea, Dawson's Landing and Clearwater Park, most built since 2005. The original town centre and older housing are clustered near the north end of the lake around Chestermere Boulevard.

04
Parks, recreation and everyday amenities

Beyond the lakeshore parks, the Chestermere Regional Recreation Centre provides arenas, a fitness centre and the Chestermere Public Library. A pathway system circles much of the lake. Everyday shopping is along Chestermere Boulevard and near the Highway 1 interchange; East Hills, a large retail centre in southeast Calgary, is a short drive west.

05
Schools

Public schools are operated by Rocky View Schools, including Chestermere High School. Catholic schools are operated by the Calgary Catholic School District. Confirm the designated school for any specific address with the division, as catchments change as the east-side communities grow.

06
Housing

Chestermere is predominantly detached homes, many on larger lots than are typical in newer Calgary communities, with lakefront and lake-view properties along both shores. Townhomes and low-rise condos are found mainly in the newer east-side communities. Current listings update live on the MLS® search below.

Your REALTOR®

"Chestermere is the closest of the surrounding cities to downtown Calgary, and the lake makes it a different kind of place to live. I like to walk buyers through both the summer and the winter picture before they decide."
