Cranston lies east of Deerfoot Trail and south of Cranston Avenue and the Cranston interchange, on the bench above Fish Creek Park. Deerfoot Trail runs along its western edge, giving a direct route north; Stoney Trail's south leg is a few minutes away. Calgary Transit bus routes connect to the Somerset. Bridlewood LRT and to Seton. The community's Fish Creek escarpment edge is a defining feature, many homes on the south and west edges back onto the park.

Century Hall is the Cranston Residents Association's facility, with a gymnasium, banquet room, splash park, hockey rink, tennis courts and playground, and a year-round events program; the annual fee applies to every property and is registered on title. The community's pathways connect down the escarpment into Fish Creek Provincial Park and along the Bow River. Riverstone, on the valley floor, has its own pathway network along the river and toward the park.

Cranston Market and the shops along Cranston Avenue and Cranston Boulevard cover groceries, pharmacy and everyday services. The Seton district, with the South Health Campus, YMCA, library, cinema and big-box retail, is immediately south, and the 130 Avenue SE commercial strip is a short drive north.

The Calgary Board of Education operates Cranston School and Dr. George Stanley School in the community; the Calgary Catholic School District operates Christ the King School. High school designations are to schools in the wider southeast and change as new schools open; confirm the designated school for a specific address with the board.

Cranston's detached homes span more than two decades of construction: 2000s-era homes in the original sections near Cranston Avenue, later phases moving south and east, and the Riverstone section along the Bow River with the community's largest lots and estate homes.
